chapter 5: organizational structure that support strategic initiatives


CHAPTER 5: ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURES THAT SUPPORT STRATEGIC INITIATIVES 

*      CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER (CIO) is responsible for :
*      Overseeing all uses of information technology
*      Ensuring the strategic alignment of IT with business goals and objectives
*      CIO often reports directly to the CEO
*      Broad function of a CIO include:
o   Manager- ensure the delivery of all IT projects on time and within budget
o   Leader- ensure the strategic vision of IT is in line with the strategic vision of the organization
o   Communicator- advocate and communicate the IT strategy  by building and maintaining strong executive relationship
*      CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER (CTO) is responsible for:
*      Ensuring the throughput, speed, accuracy, availability and reliability of an organization’s information technology
*      CTO have direct responsibility for ensuring the efficiency of IT system throughout the organization
*      CHIEF SECURITY OFFICER (CSO) is responsible for:
*      Ensuring the security of IT system and developing strategies and IT safeguards against attacks from hackers and viruses
*      CHIEF PRIVACY OFFICER(CPO) is responsible for:
*      Ensuring the ethical and legal use of information within the organization.
*      CPO are the newest senior executive position in IT
*      CHIEF KNOWLEDGE OFFICER (CKO) is responsible for:
*      Collecting, maintaining and distribution the organization’s knowledge
*      CKO design programs and system that make it easy for people to reuse knowledge
*      CKO must continuously encourage employee contributions to keep the system up-to-date
*       One of the greatest challenges today is effective communication between business personnel  
       and IT personnel.
*       Business personnel possess expertise in functional areas such as marketing, accounting, sales  
       and so on
*       Improving communications: 
o   Business personnel must seek to increase their understanding of IT. Although they do not need to 
    know every technical detail, it will benefit their careers to understand what they can and cannot  
    accomplish by using IT
o   An organization must develop strategies for integrating its IT personnel into the various business 
    function :
*      Ethics: the principles and standards that guide our behavior towards other people
*      Privacy: is the right to be left alone when you want to be to have control over your own personal possession and not to be observed without your consent
*      Issues affected by technology advances:
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
Intangible creative work that is embodied in physical form
COPYRIGHT
The legal protection afforded an expression of an idea such as a song, video game and some types of proprietary documents
FAIR USE DOCTRINE
In certain situations, it is legal to use copyrighted material
PIRATED SOFTWARE
The authorized use, duplication, distribution or sale of copyrighted software
COUNTERFEIT SOFTWARE
Software that is manufactured to look like the real thing and sold as such

*      Primary reasons privacy issues reduce trust for E-business:

1.       Loss of personal privacy is a top concern for Americans in the 21st century
2.       Among internet users, 37% would be “a lot” more inclined to purchase a product on a website 
       that had a privacy policy
3.      Privacy/security is the number one factor that would convert internet researchers into internet 
       buyers
